Demand to free Hindraf leaders gains momentum in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 22 : The demand for the release of five ethnic Indian leaders jailed under the stringent Internal Security Act (ISA) has gained momentum in Malaysia with political parties, the bar council and human rights bodies seeking repeal of the act.

The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) that has traditionally spoken for the 2.6 million Indian community has reiterated its repeal demand.
A constituent of the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN), it has joined in its demand by BN youth leaders belonging to all other constituents - United Malay National Organisation (UMNO), Gerakan and Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).
BN youth leaders said Sunday they plan to meet Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar over the call for the release of the five leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).
The ethnic Indian People's Progressive Party Youth Chief T. Murugiah said he had received support of other constituents to join the demand and that he would lead them to the meeting, The Star newspaper said Monday.
The five - M. Manoharan, S. Kengadharan, P. Uthayakumar, Ganabatirau and Vasanth Kumar - have been detained under ISA since last December after they organised a protest rally to highlight perceived discrimination against people of Indian origin in jobs and education.
MIC Chief S. Samy Vellu said that he would raise the matter with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi again, despite having done it many times."It is about time they were released as they pose no danger to the security of the country," he said in a statement.
Vellu also said the leaders should not be detained any longer as this would only prolong the Indian community's ill-feelings against the government.Appeals by political parties, NGOs, lawyers' bodies, including the Malaysian Bar Council and human rights bodies have not moved the government that says the five sought to disturb the delicate ethnic balance in Malaysia.
The country has over 60 percent majority Muslim Malays, 33 percent Chinese and about eight percent ethnic Indians.
A royal decree earlier this year confirming that the five serve their two-year terms had put paid to the demand even as individual and collective appeals before the courts stood rejected this month.
However, the use of ISA to detain a Malay blogger and two women, a Member of Parliament and a newspaper reporter, both ethnic Chinese, has revived protests against the government using the law to curb political dissent and media freedom.
The three were later released following widespread protests and criticism from the US State Department.

Penyokong PM tunggu lampu hijau untuk bertindak

Source Harakah

Najib mahu Zahid jadi timbalannya?

Source Harakah
Sebab pertama, kata mereka, jika Najib menjadi Presiden Umno, beliau terpaksa memilih sama

Far Right extremists flee anti-mosque rally in Germany

A weekend gathering in Cologne of far-right European extremists ended in farce when the main rally was cancelled as the organisers fled for their own safety.
Pro-Cologne, a group counting some of Europe's most prominent hardliners in its ranks, had intended to campaign against the construction of Germany's largest mosque, due to be completed in 2010 in the Ehrenfeld district of the city.
The building has attracted controversy because of its size, aiming to cater for up to 4,000 worshippers under a dome 37m (121ft) high and two 55m minarets - although they are shorter than the twin 157m spires of the cathedral that dominates the skyline of Cologne.
Politicians invited to the protest included Filip Dewinter, head of the Belgian Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) party, Andreas Mölzer, an MEP from the Austrian Freedom Party, and Mario Borghezio, an MEP in the Italian Northern League. Two members of the British National Party were also in town, including Richard Barnbrook, its sole member of the London Assembly.
A press conference to launch the pan-European movement against “Islamification” descended into chaos when its secret location - on board a Rhine river cruiser - was leaked. Left-wing activists arrived en masse to disrupt the event and were so successful that only two Pro-Cologners made it on board before the captain cast off in panic and headed for open water .
A Pro-Cologne spokesman said: “Stones, bricks and paintbombs were thrown and the panoramic windows of the Moby Dick were shattered.”
The group had then planned to tour the site of the mosque but this was stopped by the police on the ground that a busload of right-wing extremists cruising through a predominantly Muslim area might not be conducive to law and order.
So the only chance that Pro-Cologne had to make an impact was at its main rally on Saturday afternoon in the Heumarkt square. The organisers hoped for about 1,500 people. They had not reckoned on 40,000 screaming anti-fascists trying to break into the square to remonstrate with them.
With leading delegates stuck at the airport and the Heumarkt besieged, the rally was called off after only 45 minutes. The organisers began dismantling their microphones and stage, hoping that the security cordon would hold as police battled against the more violent protesters who were throwing paintbombs and snatching batons.
Although some of them were spirited away, many were penned in for several hours, unable even to get a beer as the bar owners in the square refused to serve them. Finally the BNP representatives got out, scuttling out the back of some of the buildings lining the Heumarkt, their attempts to present a united European front against Islamification in tatters.
“This was a victory for the democratic forces in this city,” Fritz Schramma, the Christian Democrat mayor, said. The city has a 120,000-strong Muslim community, part of the three million Muslims who make up about 4per cent of the German population.

Muslim body slams attack

JEDDAH (Saudi Arabia) - THE Saudi-based Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) on Sunday slammed the deadly bombing of a Pakistan hotel as an attack by the enemies of peace and contrary to Islam.
The 57-member body, which represents more than a billion Muslims worldwide, denounced Saturday's suicide truck blast at Islamabad's Marriott Hotel that killed at least 60 people and wounded 200 more.
The bombing appeared to have been timed to inflict maximum casualties, ripping through the hotel when it was packed with families breaking the daily fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu condemned the attack 'in the strongest terms.' He said 'despicable terrorist actions completely contradict the praiseworthy precepts of Islam,' and called the perpetrators 'the enemies of peace whom the international community must fight with all possible means.' A senior official in Islamabad has said the attack - using at least 500kg of explosives - bears all the hallmarks of an operation by Al-Qaeda, the terror network run by Osama bin Laden.
The blast came on the first anniversary of bin Laden's call for Pakistani Muslims to unleash jihad or holy war against the government, a vital ally in the US-led 'war on terror'.

Pope appeals for 'courage'

CASTEL GANDOLFO - POPE Benedict XVI urged world leaders on Sunday to act 'with courage' to sweep away global poverty when they gather in New York this week for the UN General Assembly.
More than 120 heads of state and government will attend the debate that begins on Tuesday against the backdrop of global economic woes that threaten to further set back the fight against poverty.
'I would like to call on the leaders who are gathering in New York ... to take and implement with courage the necessary measures to eradicate poverty, hunger, ignorance and the spread of pandemics,' the pope said.
'Such a commitment requires, in these times of global economic difficulties, special sacrifices,' added the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in his angelus prayers at his Castel Gandolfo residence near Rome.
One major theme for this year's General Assembly debate will be the flagging effort to meet the poverty-slashing Millennium Development Goals by a 2015 deadline against a backdrop of soaring food and energy prices.
The Vatican has observer status in the United Nations, with its representative eligible to contribute to debates. -- AFP

Malay blogger says arrest politically motivated

A Malaysian blogger arrested for displaying the national flag upside down on his site said yesterday that his detention was politically motivated and challenged the government to charge him.
Syed Azidi Syed Aziz, who writes the popular "Kickdefella" blog, was released on a month's bail on Saturday. He had spent three days in prison after police arrested him under the Sedition Act.
"I am hoping that they will charge me. Then I can ask the prime minister to be a witness because it was his statement, saying that what I did was evil and malicious, which compelled the police to investigate me," he told Agence France-Presse.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi ordered police to investigate Syed Azidi after he launched a campaign to fly the Malaysian flag upside down in protest against the country's political and economic turmoil.
"I do not think the police are serious about going all out in their investigating paper to charge me," said the blogger, known for his links to the opposition conservative Islamic PAS party.
"The whole scenario was politically motivated.
"They want to break me and they want to send a stern warning out to other bloggers," he added.
The award-winning screenwriter and film director was the second blogger to be arrested in Malaysia over website content.
Prominent blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who has targeted government figures, was arrested last Friday under the tough Internal Security Act (ISA).
Raja Petra, founder of the controversial Malaysia Today website, has already been charged with sedition and defamation after linking Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife to the sensational murder of a Mongolian woman.
Rights groups say about 63 people are being held under the ISA, which allows for renewable two-year periods of detention without trial and is normally used against suspected terrorists.
An opposition member of parliament and a journalist were detained under the act earlier this month but have since been released.
Their arrests prompted a cabinet minister in charge of law, Zaid Ibrahim, to resign last week in disgust.

Malaysia To Discuss Re-Pegging Of Ringgit Monday -Minister

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP)--Malaysia's finance minister will decide after a briefing on Monday if the ringgit will be re-pegged, to reduce the impact of the weakening U.S. dollar on the currency, a top minister said Sunday.
Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop said the issue will be raised at a briefing with the newly appointed Finance Minister Najib Razak, state Bernama news agency reported.
"Various issues would be presented at the briefing including the economic situation, finance and the challenges faced in Malaysia and in the international arena," Nor Mohamed said, according to Bernama.
Former premier Mahathir Mohamad had called for the ringgit to be re-pegged, saying stabilizing the exchange rate could cushion the impact of the global economic slowdown on the country, the Star newspaper quoted him as saying on Sunday.
"We shouldn't float the currency. The country would lose money if the currency is vulnerable to external forces," he said.
Malaysia banned offshore trading of the ringgit and pegged the currency at 3.80 to the U.S. dollar in 1998, during Mahathir's tenure, to restrict currency speculation during the financial crisis which ravaged East Asian economies.
The peg was removed in July 2005 for a managed float against a basket of currencies and the ringgit has appreciated steadily since then.
On Friday, the ringgit closed at 3.4570/4620 against the U.S. dollar.
Trade Minister Muhyiddin Yasin backed Mahathir's call, saying some of the pegging mechanisms adopted in 1998 could be revisited to protect the economy.
"The uncertain global economy today is due to the subprime problems prevailing in the United States which resulted in several major banks in the country going bankrupt, and this scenario is different from the situation in 1997," Muhyiddin said, according to Bernama.

2,000 SAPP members quit

Sandakan: About 2,000 members from 15 branches of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) in Tanjung Papat have quit the party in a show of support for party Deputy President Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah who was against the SAPP pulling out of the Barisan Nasional (BN).
They announced their decision at a meeting with Tan here on Friday night, leaving SAPP with only the Slipway branch in Tanjung Papat chaired by Tanjung Papat Liaison Committee Chairman, Poon Kee Yang, who has been appointed to replace Tan.
Sandakan SAPP Youth Chief, Alex Lim Su Chung, and Sandakan SAPP Wanita Chief Jane Ng Nyuk Jin, also expressed their intention to leave the party for the same reason.
Kampung Melayu Bumiputera SAPP branch leader, Shaiful Bahari Muin, said the decision by the branch members to quit the party was to show their support for Tan in disagreeing with the party's withdrawal from the BN on Wednesday.
"We unanimously support Tan and agree to leave SAPP. To us, Tan is a party leader and an elected representative who thinks about the people and his supporters in making any decision," he said.
Tan, who is Tanjung Papat State Assemblyman, had been the Sandakan SAPP Chairman.
The party post is now held by SAPP Secretary-General Datuk Richard Yong We Kong.

Selepas gagal turunkan harga minyak, ISA pula digunakan

Source Harakah

Pemimpin Umno Pulau Pinang pun tolak PM

Source Harakah
Najib sendiri dihantui pelbagai masalah.

Spooked by political scenario

Source TheStar
IT’S been six months since the March 8 general election but the perception is that many Malaysians just do not know how to stop politicking, to the point that we are in danger of becoming a political basket case.
Let’s start with Umno, the backbone of the Barisan Nasional. Despite being whipped by the Pakatan Rakyat in the elections, the perception is that it has failed to make serious changes.
Some of the leaders acknowledge the need to reinvent the party to win back the votes and to assess why it suffered such massive losses. But if there is any serious remake of the party, it has not been seen.
Politically, the perception given is that it believes that the losses would have not happen had the Malay swing to the opposition not materialised, and it believes that segments of the Malays now regret the political shift.
Some of the older Umno leaders, who have lost connection with the younger Malay electorate, cherish the old ways of politics, believing that if it worked during their time, it would work again.
Some push the race card, preferring to still talk of race supremacy, refusing to accept that this would only further alienate Malaysians who have long grown sick of such race politics.
In states under Pakatan Rakyat, there are Umno leaders who still act as if they are in the government, still referring to the new state government leaders as opposition.
Old schools
Many Umno leaders in these Pakatan-controlled states are unable to function as opposition figures. In fact, some have not even come to terms with this harsh reality after six months.
Some in the old schools of politics are still unable to comprehend the New Media as the new tool of politics.
The newspapers continue to be scanned for criticism, however mild they may be, while the free-wheeling comments on the Net are perceived as near anarchy by them.
From indecisive actions to downright silly responses, some Umno leaders are still wondering why the party has become unpopular as some continue shooting themselves in the foot.
And instead of regaining the trust of the people after the March 8 damage, they channel their resources and energy to their Umno polls €“ as the rakyat watch and shake their heads in disbelief.
By the way, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s gathering in Kelana Jaya last week was broadcast “live” on his blog with clear visual and sound bites, and surely this must be news for many Umno leaders.
And speaking of Anwar, his impatience has always been his Achilles’ heels, as the manner he has pushed for the defections of Barisan Nasional elected representatives has raised many questions.
Everything may be fair game in a war, as his supporters have justified in their efforts to topple the government. But the result is that the Pakatan is now accused of wooing backbenchers with offers of government positions and money, which goes against the principles of what it is supposedly fighting for.
Even if these allegations are baseless, it is not correct for elected representatives to defect, no matter how convincing the arguments.
But Sept 16 was never meant to be a reality. It fired up the imagination of many Malaysians against an unpopular government but if Anwar truly had the numbers, it would have been game over.
Political antics
It was merely a clever political poker tactic, which his critics would call a bluff, but the truth shall eventually prevail.
If it were true, these defectors would have stood behind Anwar at the press conference and declared their new political allegiance.
The biggest losers would be ordinary Malaysians, not the politicians waiting to reap the rewards, because investors have become jittery about the Malaysian market.
The Pakatan should just get on with the task of governing their states, and the perception is that in Penang and Selangor, the Chief Minister and Mentri Besar are performing reasonably well.
Prove their worth, take the fight in the next round and they could just finish off the Barisan Nasional this time, if the coalition still cannot handle themselves well.
The endless, if not mindless, politicking has dented our image abroad as Malaysia is no longer seen as a place for serious investment.
Why should investors put up with speculations over whether the federal government would collapse, the sexual preferences of our politicians, who would be hauled up under the Internal Security Act next and whether our Ministers are in their offices to listen to an investment proposal or out busy campaigning for their party polls.
Malaysians want to see politicians doing some real work, not taking a trip to Taiwan supposedly to learn about agriculture or wooing MPs to switch camps.

Heavyweights wrestle for Youth post

Source TheStar
Analysis by Joceline Tan
DATUK Mukhriz Mahathir had been trailing as the underdog in the race for the Umno Youth leadership.
He has a family name that opens doors but somehow the doors were not opening for him.
Each time his famous father opened his mouth, another door slammed in the son’s face.
At one stage, Mukhriz was not even sure of securing the requisite 38 nominations to contest the post.
But the wind has shifted and when he formally announced his intention to go for the post last week, he was pretty confident of securing the nominations.
For the occasion, Mukhriz picked his old family home in Titi Gajah, Kedah, where it had all begun for his father and where he hopes it will now begin for him.
Mukhriz, a relatively new face in Umno Youth politics, has not had an easy time because he was seen as the rebellious voice who had dared to ask Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to step down after the general election losses.
But in one of those turns of events, Mukhriz’s view does not seem that out of line anymore.
No less than Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has said the same and in a few weeks’ time, the question of whether there should be a change in leadership in the party will be decided by Umno divisions all over the country.
Mukhriz has gone overnight from fringe to mainstream.
But he is still far from being ahead in the race which, to date, also features incumbent deputy Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and Padang Besar Umno head Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
Three heavyweights
The fight will eventually boil down to the three heavyweights, that is, Khairy, Khir and Mukhriz because not many think Zahidi can secure the nominations.
Khairy only formally declared he was in the race on Wednesday in his Rembau home-ground, surrounded by some of his staunchest supporters.
“Unlike Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Khairy has the numbers,” said Umno Youth secretary Datuk Rahman Dahlan.
His supporters say he is ahead of the rest although it is hard to tell because this is, after all, Khairy’s first real contest in the party.
He has pretty much had things on a silver platter so far. He was appointed into the Umno Youth exco in 2001 by Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, and in 2004 he won the No. 2 post uncontested when his would-be challengers backed off.
Khir is by far the most tested. In 2000, he won a place on the Umno Youth exco strictly on his own steam and in 2004, he joined the supreme council with the highest number of votes.
Mukhriz stunned everyone in 2004 when he made his debut in the Umno Youth exco with the most votes. This was also the year when Khairy was booed by delegates who saw his walk-in win as less than fair play.
But all that is now water under the bridge. Khairy has put in his share of work and this is his chance to prove that he is more than just the famous son-in-law.
Choosing the right Umno Youth leader has never been more urgent. The wing’s image has not been this low since 1998 when young Malays rejected Umno over the sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
History is repeating itself. Umno Youth did not deliver the young Malay vote in March and Umno’s candidate lost miserably among the younger voters in the Permatang Pauh by-election.
It is hardly a glowing report card for Hishammuddin to take to the next stage nor the best track record for Khairy to vie for the top post.
The wing is perceived as self-serving, subservient to the leadership and incapable of articulating the aspirations of young Malays.
The political landscape has changed and whoever wins faces the tough task of reinventing the wing and winning back the young ground.
“It’s very important for me that the next Umno Youth leader is respected by people inside as well as outside the party,” said Umno Youth exco member Datuk Sazmi Miah.
But the majority of the 400 or so delegates who will vote in the wing’s new leadership rarely see beyond what the party can do for them.
They still look up to someone who can articulate Malay interests and views; they are, after all, a Malay nationalist party. Incumbents Hishammuddin and Khairy felt obliged to live up to such expectations and they have learnt that it is not possible to be Malay ultras one day and Malaysian leaders the next.
Striking a balance
And that is another challenge for the next Umno Youth leader - striking a balance.
Khairy, at 32, is the only one among the four candidates who can honestly claim to be part of the youth generation. Mukhriz is 44, Dr Khir is 45 while Zahidi is 48.
Earlier, Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, 58, drew gasps of disbelief when he toyed with the idea of going for the post.
To date, Mukhriz has the most interesting message. He said he would not accept a government post if given the mandate to lead Umno Youth. A government post takes up time or, worse, compromises the priorities of a Youth leader. He wants to give his full attention to the wing and he said he is not in it for personal gain or glamour.
“The wing should be not be used by the leaders to endorse decisions that are not popular with our grassroots. That’s why young Malays have run away from us,” said Sazmi, a long-time friend of Mukhriz.
But Mukhriz will have to shake off his tendency to defend his father and begin projecting his own views.
It is unclear how Mukhriz’s message of change will go down with the Youth grassroots, particularly in the face of Khairy’s uber-campaign in the past weeks.
Since the fasting month began, the website affiliated to him has been filled with reports and pictures of him in kampung mode. He has been sporting a full beard, kain pelekat (a Malay skirt) and presenting foodstuff to the needy.
“He has been the target of slander but he has grassroots appeal and is not afraid of rolling up his sleeves to work,” said Rahman.
But Khairy remains a controversial figure inside and outside Umno and the renewed pressure for the Prime Minister to fast-forward his 2010 exit plan is bound to impact his campaign.
He was a glittering political star and the shoo-in successor to Hishammuddin before the March political tsunami. His prospects have also been affected by his father-in-law’s ratings.
Dr Khir has been diligently campaigning without much fanfare. He is projecting himself as an independent voice for the wing but feelings are still raw over the loss of Selangor and he has to tread very carefully.
His strength remains his humble kampung roots and unassuming ways and he could be the dark horse to watch in the contest.
There is a mood for change in the air and the playing field has grown a little more level; may the best man win.

Dr M tingkat serangan ketika MT tolak PM
