KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians should continue to uphold the true Malaysian spirit of mutual respect, being helpful and being sensitive to the feelings of other communities to ensure harmony and unity, said MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.
“As Malaysians, we should continue our efforts to maintain a harmonious, progressive and peaceful society.
“On behalf of the MCA, I wish to take this opportunity to say Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all Muslims,” he said in his Raya message.
Ong said Malaysian Muslims have adopted a thoughtful, helpful, polite and caring spirit in their everyday life.
He said Muslims emphasised mutual respect and tolerance, which are common values stressed by the Chinese community in the country, too.
“Through the moderate approach and mutual respect, people of different backgrounds and communities can work together for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he said.
“For decades, Malaysians of various communities and religions have celebrated this joyous occasion together, such as attending the open houses organised by Muslim friends in the country.
“Non-Muslims should continue the tradition as a way to foster a closer relationship in our multiracial society. We must continue to promote this in the spirit of muhibbah,” he said.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, who is also MCA secretary-general, said unity was built through the various festivals celebrated by all races.
He said Hari Raya was a meaningful celebration for Malaysians as it helped foster closer ties with mutual understanding and respect for one another’s culture and religion.
“To all those who are going back to celebrate Hari Raya in their kampung, please make sure your vehicles are in good condition before you start your journey. Drive safely.”
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said it was important to foster closer ties among the different races, which can be best done during the festive season.
“Let us continue the tradition of visiting friends at their open houses. It is a unique tradition that can only be witnessed in Malaysia,” he said.
People’s Progressive Party president Datuk M. Kayveas called on all Malaysians to be responsible citizens by maintaining the peace and stability.
Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism president Datuk A. Vaithilingam said, “We pray that all Malaysians will take this opportunity to visit their Muslim neighbours, colleagues and friends. National unity is built upon such personal friendships and good neighbourliness.”
