Sandakan: About 2,000 members from 15 branches of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) in Tanjung Papat have quit the party in a show of support for party Deputy President Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah who was against the SAPP pulling out of the Barisan Nasional (BN).
They announced their decision at a meeting with Tan here on Friday night, leaving SAPP with only the Slipway branch in Tanjung Papat chaired by Tanjung Papat Liaison Committee Chairman, Poon Kee Yang, who has been appointed to replace Tan.
Sandakan SAPP Youth Chief, Alex Lim Su Chung, and Sandakan SAPP Wanita Chief Jane Ng Nyuk Jin, also expressed their intention to leave the party for the same reason.
Kampung Melayu Bumiputera SAPP branch leader, Shaiful Bahari Muin, said the decision by the branch members to quit the party was to show their support for Tan in disagreeing with the party's withdrawal from the BN on Wednesday.
"We unanimously support Tan and agree to leave SAPP. To us, Tan is a party leader and an elected representative who thinks about the people and his supporters in making any decision," he said.
Tan, who is Tanjung Papat State Assemblyman, had been the Sandakan SAPP Chairman.
The party post is now held by SAPP Secretary-General Datuk Richard Yong We Kong.
