Increase in tourist arrivals expected

GEORGE TOWN: The number of tourist arrivals in Penang is expected to increase five-fold in the next few years from the current 1.5 million a year.

This followed the state's listing as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation .
Penang Tourism Action Council chairman Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen said attracting more airline operators of long-haul and middle-haul routes into the state would be the key to bringing in the tourists.Kee said Penang should also take advantage of its position in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Golden Triangle to woo more visitors from the region.

"We expect the number of tourists from Medan and Aceh to increase further with Penang's listing as a World Heritage Site," she said after welcoming the inaugural Sriwijaya Air's Medan-Penang flight at Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas here on Monday.
The SJ0102 flight touched down at 4.15pm, 45 minutes after departing from Medan airport. The maiden flight was supposed to have arrived at 8am, but was delayed by a technical problem.
