Malaysian Style: Blame Someone Else for Your Incompetence

After 51 years of independence, we have reached a stage where we blame someone else when we are incompetent. The incumbent Prime Minister in his wisdom has decided to make Anwar Ibrahim in particular the scapegoat for all the problems he himself created for our country during nearly 5 years of his administration.

Anwar is not to be blamed for rampant corruption, abuse of power and incompetence of the Badawi administration. Neither can he be the cause of the lack of foreign direct investment, for rising inflation and unemployment, the rise in the crime rate and for the lacklustre performance of the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange. These are clear indicators that the Malaysian economy has been managed. Anwar certainly cannot be the cause for the current lack of public and investor confidence. Both the public and investors can make their own assessment of prospects for Malaysia.

The responsibility for our economic malaise rests with the present UMNO led Barisan Nasional government. Yet today the prime minister has the temerity to say to us Malaysians that “he (Anwar) has become a threat to the economy and possibly (national) security”. In fact, Anwar has an economic agenda which received the endorsement of Malaysian voters in the March 8 General Election and he enjoys our confidence and those voters in Pematang Pauh who gave a resounding victory in the August 26 by election.

Since now Anwar has the numbers to form the new next government, the Prime Minister should invite him, Lim Kit Siang and Ustaz Abdul Hadi Awang to Putrajaya to discuss the orderly and peaceful transfer of power to Pakatan Rakyat. In stead the Prime Minister says he has nothing to discuss with Anwar and his Pakatan Raykat colleagues. Most Malaysians will disagree with him. We think that there is plenty to discuss since the country is facing difficult times which can only worsen in 2009, given adverse external developments, mainly in the United States and Europe. Furthermore, peace loving Malaysians are of the view that using the ISA against Anwar would undoubtedly have severe repercussions. It would be unacceptable to them and the international community.—Din Merican
